Stress and Anxiety

A small amount of pressure is good for us –we’re motivated to do more and push ourselves further to succeed. Too much pressure and we begin to suffer.

“…stress is not inherent in an event but results from how you perceive and, therefore, respond to an event…Therefore one key to reducing stress is to modify your perceptions. Instead of a crisis…see exactly the same situation as an opportunity.”
Dr Wayne Topping, Success over Distress

Mind over Matter
Our mental perceptions can define our physical capabilities. Scientific research has shown that what we imagine is as real to our brain as what we have actually experienced.
What does this mean to you? As far as the brain is concerned, when you visualise an outcome in detail (good or bad), you are creating the neural associations that would be stimulated by a real life experience and triggering the same brain/body circuitry.

Stress in itself is not the enemy. The problem is ‘distress’, unresolved stress response which leads to short circuits in the body’s normal electrical communication. Distress is caused by inadequate coping mechanisms in response to the obstacles which we must all deal with in daily life.

What happens when we are stressed or anxious? We go into ‘flight or fight’ mode and are trapped in ‘back brain’ which is not always useful in today’s society. We experience palpitations, racing heart, sweaty palms, and butterflies in the stomach. Untreated stress and anxiety can lead to long-term health problems and depression. New ideas and choices (a front brain activity) are impossible while we are trapped in back brain, reactive survival patterns.

Hypnotherapy can help you to reprogramme your subconscious mind. Stress and anxiety management using hypnotherapy can be extremely effective. Treatment can address excessive worrying, anxiety, insomnia,, depression and panic attacks.
You will be taught self-hypnosis and a range of relaxation techniques to complement the hypnotherapy sessions in order to re-educate your brain/ body response so that you react differently to common stressors.

 Fears and Phobias
Fear can be a very valuable emotion which keeps us safe from harm. However, when this emotion gets out of hand, it can have a detrimental effect on a person’s life. Fear is defined as an unpleasant feeling of perceived risk or danger but when this emotion escalates into a phobia, these irrational or excessive fears can overwhelm your daily life. Fear of spiders, snakes, flying, dental treatment are examples of some phobias which have been successfully treated with hypnotherapy.

Common symptoms
Phobic symptoms can arise through exposure to the feared object or situation, or sometimes by simply thinking about the object or situation. Common symptoms include:
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Breathlessness
  • Fear of dying
  • A sense of unreality
  • Panic attacks

Hypnotherapy can be very helpful in the treatment of fears and phobias. Because hypnotherapy bypasses the conscious mind and works directly with the subconscious mind, it provides an effective method of changing deep-seated fears and phobias . Hypnotherapy is effective in treatment fears and phobias because it helps you reprogramme your subconscious mind to react differently.
